Interesting post Kristin. I’ve been following the evolution of this anthology a little bit and I’ve been meaning to get in touch with Akua who initially contacted me about it. I agree with your concerns and the fact that we need more literature originally written in African languages is undisputed. I’ll challenge you though to complicate your own position a little by addressing also the challenges, and thinking about why we have so little literature written in African languages in the first place. I’m curious to hear your thoughts because I think a project like this anthology must necessarily engage a discussion of power, dominant narratives and counter-narratives. In other words, this project should be a self-conscious one that allows us not only to rectify the problem/lack, but to question why it exists in the first place. In the meantime, I’ll leave you with two readings on the topic (being a lit. teacher I must necessarily leave you with homework…haha): Ngugi wa thiong’o's Decolonizing the Mind (as well as his excellent novel Wizard of the Crow, originally written in Gikuyu and translated into English) and Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices by Stuart Hall. Hope all is well.
